Review ~ Darker Side of Heaven by K.B. Cutter

Shadows lengthen over the world. Turmoil rages.

DarkerSideSomething evil this way comes…

Emotionally conflicted avenger Chalice Noire, product of an unholy union between demon and angel, is a slayer to the forces of darkness. Employed by shadowy benefactors in Rome, her sect is commanded by fallen angel Nikolai Voss, whose allegiance is not to the church but to the flame of vengeance that burns within.

But Chalice possesses a holy relic, a Weapon of the Mass, Nikolai desperately craves, and he will stop at nothing to retrieve it, destroying anything or anyone, including his own soul.

Renegade vampire Adam Blake is a recluse, attempting to bury his troubled past and the tortured memory of his former lover, Chalice Noire, in America’s last frontier: the Alaskan wilderness.

Armageddon looms, the agents of light and darkness gather forces. The battle to be fought not on the sands of prophecy, but in the rugged beauty of Alaska, where Chalice and Adam once again cross paths. Can they reconcile their past to save humanity’s future?

A beautifully dark gothic tale!

This was my kind of read. And what a dynamic plot! Wow. I love the way Mr. Cutter’s mind works.

First of all this story is filled with dark sex and death. I’m going to do my best and write this review without giving away the goods. 😉

It starts off with a sultry scene that quickly unfolds into a battle. Chalice Noire uses her body and sexuality to draw in the demons and eliminate them. Just the type of heroine I like to read about. She was tough, arrogant in ways, and bit of a bitch. I expected nothing less from a half-breed assassin ~ hard as stone on the outside and full of emotions on the inside.

Chalice’s heart was divided between two men, one a human soldier, and the other a devoted vampire. Both men would lie down their lives for her, as any man would do who’s in love. Their emotions were put to the test because Chalice was in danger throughout this whole story.

Nikolai Voss, the villainous angel of the plot lived up to his role. He was a nasty piece of work—he and his shifter companion, Carmella, who was just as wicked as he was. Everywhere he went he left a trail of death and semen in his wake. *grin* Like I said, nasty piece of work. His goal is to obtain the sacred dagger—a supernatural weapon of mass destruction, which luckily for us, is in Chalice’s possession.

To protect all of mankind and to keep Nikolai from dragging this world into the fiery pits of hell, she guards it with her life.

Even though this story is 137 pages in length it’s a fairly quick read.

What I enjoyed most about this story were the tales within. It wasn’t just about the heroine, her lovers and the villain. The plot branches out and takes you into the lives of the additional characters. My only problem with that was the lack of character development with the supporting cast and the length of the story. It seemed a bit rushed.

Sure the heroine is laid out in great detail, and so is the villain in many ways, but given the dynamics of the tale, I believe there should’ve been more. As a reader who absolutely loves these types of stories, I couldn’t help but want more. I wanted to know more about Sheeba and her lover, Cassie, Azur and her angelic roots, the Satyrs and the witch April… There was much to absorb, many characters to know but not enough words to fill the void.

That aside, I still enjoyed it and was left with a smile at the end. Fantastic read, Mr. Cutter!

  1. I’d love to see Darker become a series. My editor told me to start banging out the sequels, but the publisher nixed the idea. I can always expand on the universe I’ve created and see what happens in the future with another story.
