7 Things About My Writing #IndieAuthor #AuthorReveal #AmWriting

On Facebook, fellow author—Dawn Montgomery challenged me to share 7 things about my writing. Honestly, I thought I didn’t have much to tell until I started writing them out. I have many knacks and quirks that you may or may not find interesting, or at the very least, amusing.

Needless to say, challenge accepted!

Okay, here we go…

1. My stories never end the way I thought they would, or more so, the way I want them to end. In my mind it plays out a certain way, but when I start typing, a different story comes out. This is the main reason I refuse to write from an outline, or a drawn out synopsis. I’ve tried to stay on the beaten path, but I always veer off. Does that make me a rebel? *giggle*

When I say my stories writes themselves, I’m not kidding.

2. While writing a love scene, I have to have a glass of wine in reach. Red or white, it doesn’t matter. I sometimes light scented candles as well and play some soothing, baby-making tunes. Sade, Floetry, Jill Scott, Jhene Aiko—just to name a few artists on my “Falling in Lust” playlist… The ambiance gotta be right for the scene to work, just like with foreplay and sex. Wine encourages my sexy thoughts and makes my muse happy.

I suppose I could say, I go all out to seduce my muse and get her in the mood. 😉

3. I write out action and love scenes before I tie the story together. The story never comes to me in order, but when certain scenes emerge, I have to get it out, especially battle scenes. They play out so vividly in my mind… every move, every swing, every strike. Sometimes it takes me days to perfect a fight scene. There’s emotion and a cause that has to scream from the words. If I read it later and I don’t feel that emotion during the scene, I’ll go into rewrite mode. It has to feel like I’m there with the characters or it gets tossed in the bin and I start over.

Hmm… Starting over… There’s a process that happens often during my writing. To make it right, sometimes that’s what it takes.

Alrighty, moving on…

4. I never write for word count. When I used to write for a publisher, I paid attention to word count because I was expected to, and I hated it, with a passion. Even as I type this, I’m grinding my teeth at the notion. In my opinion watching word count hinders my creativity. It can cause me to get too wordy or over-write a scene…

Now that I’m an indie author, word count can kiss my ass. I write the story and however many words I end up with, so be it.

5. When going back through my chapters, I read them aloud. During the dialogue read-overs, I change my voice to sound like the characters. *giggle* I used to do it just to rouse my own amusement. Now, I do it unconsciously. While it sounds intense and dramatic to me, it cracks my sons and hubby up. They love to listen to my read-overs.

6. I make characters out of people I meet and people in my life. Yes, if you’ve met me and made a lasting impression, you’ve probably made an appearance in one of my stories, OR, you’ll show up in my novel in the near future. I’ve only had one friend to see characteristics of herself in one of my characters. Funny thing is, I patterned that character after her. I just never told her. One of these days, she gonna figure it out and kick my butt for it. LOL!

7. I’m always writing, even when I’m not on my computer. My iPhone is my best friend. When a thought for a story, or a scene comes to me while I’m out, Siri jots it down for me. 40% of my writing is done through my iPhone. Thank you, Siri.

And that’s all she wrote folks! Thanks for swinging by my blog. *sips coffee* See you next time. 😉

Haunted by my Characters #ASMSG #IndieAuthor #amwriting

I confess, I stumbled off the beaten path, and my characters punished me for it.

When I first started writing, there were 2 characters who were my driving force. Rayne and Demetri—my dark angels, my beautiful muses.

Sure, I created other stories. One novel was even published before the Dragon Queen Series was brought to the public, but Rayne and Demetri were the beginning of it all. They sparked my gift of writing and compelled me to reach for my pen and connect it to paper, and later they were the reason my fingers stroked the keys.

Before I continue, I have to say I have the greatest readers in the world. I may not get a chance to always reply back to the messages sent due to my tight writing schedule, but I read them and I appreciate them. You guys will not hesitate to give me feedback and let me know how much you love my writing and my characters. That means a lot to me.

When the Carnal Diaries series came about, the readers loved it and they begged for more. You know me, I aim to please. I received more feedback from that series than the Dragon Queen series. As a result, Carnal Diaries gained all of my attention.

Now the feedback wasn’t the only reason I committed to the series. As most of you know, the Carnal Diaries series are short stories. Therefore, it takes me less time to write them. In addition to that, they generate more sales.

Those facts alone hindered my focus. I became wrapped up in making more money than satisfying the nagging within. And there was definitely a nagging.

In short, The Dragon Queen Series fell by my waist side. It wasn’t pulling in bigger bank and I wasn’t getting a lot of reviews on it, so I figured it wouldn’t be missed if I set it aside for a while and concentrated on what the readers desired.

Well, I was sorely mistaken.

It’s been a looong time since I’ve had a character visit me in my dreams. Sometimes I remember them coming to me, sometimes I don’t. However, when it started to happen again, I was forced to pay attention.

Let me tell you why.

At first, it was random sightings.

I was on this terrifying roller-coaster ride with Chris Pratt. I couldn’t get off of it and the ride wouldn’t stop. It had these crazy, steep drops and insane loop de-loops that scared the crap out of me. While Chris was having a great time, laughing and shouting, I was screaming for my life and holding my pee. Every time the roller-coaster car approached the platform where we were supposed to get off and let others on, it would slow down, but not stop.

Demetri would appear, looking overwhelmingly beautiful as he is. He wouldn’t say anything, or give me an expression of anger or contempt. No, he would just stand there, staring at me. It gave me such an eerie feeling. Although, he wasn’t near the controls, I knew he was the reason the car wouldn’t stop. He was the reason I couldn’t get off.

That was night #1 I woke up in a cold sweat. But I didn’t think nothing of it. I just looked at it as a bad dream…

Until it happened again.

About a week later, I was at a party with Jason Statham. (Yes, celebrities often visit me in my dreams. Don’t judge.) He introduced me to different people, but none of them had faces. What was weird is, seeing the people without faces didn’t seem like anything out of the norm, which was strange in itself. Jason stepped away to get drinks. I started dancing, even though there wasn’t any music playing. The scene changed and lights dimmed. I was still surrounded by people, but they were just shadows now. Demetri appeared out of thin air, like he always does.

I asked him, “What are you doing here?” I’m not sure if it’s something I self-consciously wanted to ask him, but that’s what came out of my mouth.

Without saying a word, he took my hand and pulled me close. He played in my hair, just ran his fingers from the root to the tips in a seductive manner. I’m thinking, damn, D is about to get sexy with me. Truth is, I have absolutely no problem with that. It’s not like he hasn’t gotten sexy with me before. In the heat of the moment, he suddenly gripped my hair and yanked my head back, HARD. And then, HE BIT ME! And it hurt, like really hurt.

Muthafucka got me bleeding…! He knows I’m anemic. Why would he do that? Was he trying to kill me?

I woke up, holding my neck, sweating like crazy. Like, what the eff? The thing about Demetri is, his bite is not painful, unless, he wants it to be painful. That’s when I knew he was super pissed at me. Uh-ohh…

It was almost 4 o’clock in the morning. I ran downstairs to my office and flipped open my laptop. I wrote a chapter in the current WIP for the Dragon Queen Series. Then I hopped over to my WIP in the Carnal Diaries Series since it was almost done. Might as well finish it since I’m wide awake, right? I stayed up until it was time to send my oldest son off to school. After I got him on the bus, I laid back down to catch up on the sleep I missed out on.

Why the hell did I do that? I should’ve been afraid to sleep after that last unexpected visit, but I was soo tired.

Anywho, I closed my eyes and found myself in the Walking Dead world. *sigh* This time, my hubby was in the dream, with me, Daryl and Rick. We were trapped in a stranger’s house, surrounded by walkers. It was a pretty big house, almost like a mansion. We had it boarded up and fenced in, but considering the walkers’ increasing numbers, we wouldn’t be able to stay there for long. The men were locked in a debate on our next course of action. My hubby thought we should make a run for it. Rick wanted to hold down the fort and buy our time until we had no other choice but to run. And Daryl wanted fight off as many walkers as we could to lessen their numbers.

Outside the house, I heard the sound of blades slicing through flesh. I thought it was Michonne, or at least I hoped it was her. I looked through the window, and nope, it wasn’t her.

It was Demetri, and Rayne. They were plowing the field, chopping up walkers left, right and center. Body parts and blood was everywhere. I got scared ‘cause I already know I’m on Demetri’s shit list and if he’s pissed at me, I was 100% sure Rayne was pissed at me too.

I tried to get the guys attention to let them know a bigger threat was in our front lawn, but they were too engrossed in their argument. I kept thinking, when Rayne and Demetri were done with the walkers, who are they going to turn their blades on next? With that being the case, I knew they were coming in to kill us all, and they were most likely going to start with me. It was like some weird nightmarish Dragon Queen series/the Walking Dead crossover. I wanted out of it! I forced myself to wake up before things could get worse. Well, in truth, my full bladder forced me to wake up.

So, from that day on, I’ve been giving the Dragon Queen Series my full attention. Mainly because I don’t want my characters to murder me in my sleep. 😉

This series is close to my heart, so I’ve been busting my ass trying to make it perfect. I’ve even neglected my blog, as many of you have noticed. That’s how hard I’ve been grinding. I refuse to serve microwaved novels. That’s something you will never get from me. I rather take my time and do it right or not do it at all.

With that said… to those of you who are wondering the fate of the DQ series, and for those of you who have been sending me messages begging for the next book, I promise you, it’s coming like a wild firestorm.

The question is, are you ready for it?

I’m introducing new characters, and fleshing out old ones for the readers who desire to know more about the guardians and all of the characters that make the Dragon Queen Series so dynamic and diverse.

Thank you for your patience, and thank you for your support. Stay tuned!

The Author Spotlight is on Serenity King! @SerenitysCircle #InterracialRomance #EroticRomance

Happy Hump Day, folks! Today, I’d like to shine the spotlight on my friend and fellow interracial romance author, Serenity King!

Take a peek at her new release, Simply Pleasures.

SK-SB-CAmeron-bk1-300x450A defense attorney working for Cameron, Cameron & LaSalle, P.C., Alisha Carrington, hasn’t dated anyone since she was betrayed by her fiancé. Too afraid to risk her heart again, she has vowed to dedicate her life to building her career. Unbeknownst to Alisha, she has caught the eye of two very powerful men, Tristan Cameron and James Langston.

Tristan is more than a drop-dead gorgeous attorney. Undercover for the FBI, he has been using his family’s law practice in Atlanta as his front. Although he loves women, his undercover work is just too dangerous for him to commit to one woman. Summoned to New York by his brother, Tristan comes face-to-face with the one woman who can make him rethink his vows against commitment—Alisha. He’s tried to resist his attraction to the sexy African-American for years, but when Alisha’s life is threatened, he vows to keep her safe…and the powers-that-be help them both.

Tristan noticed the ebony beauty as soon as she opened the door. He sucked in his breath in admiration. He had noticed Alisha every time he had come into the New York office, but he had kept his distance. She was another reason he stayed away. He knew that she had no idea of his interest in her, and he wanted it to remain that way. Anyway, it seemed that whenever he came within a few feet of the lady, she would turn and go in the opposite direction. His brother, knowing him as well as he did, had evidently picked up on his interest in Alisha. So that’s her name—and she’s single, apparently. He’d never known her name. Had never bothered to find out. Just knew that he’d had a strong physical attraction to her. Up close, she was even prettier than he’d originally thought.

Maybe New York isn’t so bad after all. Tristan heard her speak and was floored. Her smoky voice turned him on. He couldn’t keep his eyes off her. He could feel Brandon staring him and couldn’t care less. Well, Damn! Tristan thought, surreptitiously looking at her in admiration.

There she was in the office of the partners, standing tall with her head up like she didn’t have a care in the world. Most people, when called to one of their offices, were scared shitless that they had done something wrong, but not Ms. Alisha Carrington. In fact, she looked mad as hell that he was gawking at her openly.

He knew he should stop, but she was even more beautiful up close. Tristan loved the fact that she appeared to have some fire to her, too.

* * *

Alisha said, “Hello David…Mr. Cameron.”

“How are you, Alisha?” David said.

“I’m fine. You?” She was starting to feel uncomfortable and self-conscious under Tristan’s scrutiny, and a little irate, but she couldn’t help feeling a bit flattered and turned on at the same time. Resolutely, she turned and looked at Brandon, “Hello, Brandon. Betty said you wanted to see me?”

“Uh, yes, Alisha. Thank you for seeing me on such short notice. Have a seat,” Brandon said, motioning for her to take the unoccupied seat next to David.

The very talented Jade Kerrion interviewed me earlier this year, and I must say I enjoyed every bit of it. We touched a little on my writing process, the Dragon Queen Series, and the ups and downs of my career.

“When I started writing, my goal was to answer the reader’s call, to make characters relatable to people from different backgrounds. I’d like to believe I achieved that in the Dragon Queen series.”

A Teaser Of My Latest WIP #ASMSG #interracialromance #eroticromance

This is a clip of a tale I’m working on with the brilliant and very talented Pachet Burson. She’s a new author in the game. Once you read her work, I guarantee you will not forget her. 🙂

Deadly Desires

“What have I done?” I stared at my phone, chuckling as I made my way down the hall. My stride was unhurried, even though every nerve in my body vibrated in eagerness of my impending rendezvous. I wanted to run, but I kept it cool.

A brunette sashayed in my direction as I headed for the bank of elevators. A thigh-high dress hugged her lean curves; six-inch pumps made her claves look kissable.

Pressing the up button with my thumb, I winked at her.

The clack of her heels on the tiled marble floor slowed, her smile widened and her bright blue eyes glimmered in what many would call pure lust. By her strut alone, I could tell those panties were soaking wet, if she were wearing any at all. She looked like the type who went commando every now and then.

I inhaled deeply, imagining her ripe scent beneath the expensive perfume.

“Hi, Mr. Devarati,” she breathed out on a sigh that lingered like a moan. “I’m wondering if you have a moment…”

“Not today, darling.” Smiling at her, I stepped onto the elevator. On any other day, I would’ve invited her up to the suite just to see how wet her panties were, but I had a dangerous lady assassin waiting for me.

Or at least, I hoped.

The passage I’m writing today is of a darker nature. It’s for a steampunk story, one I have yet to name.
